The organizing committee of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games apologized to the South Sudan basketball team after the mistake in playing the national anthem before its match with Puerto Rico on Sunday for Group C.
“Paris 2024 offers its sincere apologies to the South Sudan team and its fans for the human error that occurred during the playing of the national anthem before the men’s basketball game,” the organising committee said in a statement.
The statement continued: “We fully understand the gravity of the mistake, the wrong playing of the wrong national anthem was stopped quickly, and then the correct national anthem was played before the start of the match. In collaboration with our technical team, the necessary steps have been taken to understand the cause of the error and to ensure that it does not happen again.”
The organizing committee made a mistake in playing the national anthem of South Sudan, where the anthem of the Republic of Sudan was played, which caused the anger of the team’s fans and the resentment of its players on the pitch of the “Pierre Maurois” in Lille, and after applause from the public and even Puerto Rican players, the original South Sudan anthem was played.
South Sudan achieved a historic victory in its first Olympic match, at the expense of Puerto Rico 90-79, in a strong Group C, which also includes the American and Serbian teams.
