Casualties including children in attack on El Fasher, and Burhan vows to retaliate against Rapid Support Forces

Published:

The Sudanese army announced early Thursday that shelling by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on vital areas in El Fasher city resulted in the death of 5 children and injury of 4 women, while the Chairman of the Sovereignty Council Abdel Fattah al-Burhan renewed his determination to eliminate the RSF.

The army added that its air defenses and supporting forces managed to kill 8 RSF members, noting that combing operations in large parts of El Fasher’s surroundings led to the seizure of two combat vehicles.

In the same context, a medical source told Al Jazeera that two civilians were killed and others injured in RSF heavy artillery shelling on the First Quarter neighborhood in the center of El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan state, early today.

The medical source added that about 14 Sudanese are currently receiving medical care at El Obeid Hospital after being injured in the shelling that occurred last night and early today on the city.

The RSF has been shelling El Obeid for the sixth consecutive day, resulting in civilian casualties.

Burhan vows

The spokesman for the “Sudan Liberation Movement”, Sadiq Ali Al-Nour, accused the RSF of committing genocide and forced displacement, killing civilians including women and children, as well as systematic looting and burning of villages in the “Tawila” locality, west of El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state.

According to the spokesman, this has led to further complicating the humanitarian situation with more displacement and forced relocation, in an attempt to achieve political gains.

For his part, the Chairman of the Sovereignty Council and Commander of the Sudanese Army, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, said that the armed forces will stand as an impenetrable barrier to anyone who dares to compromise Sudan’s security and stability.

Burhan affirmed on Thursday in a speech in Omdurman that the army is determined to “liberate Sudan from mercenaries and agents and eliminate the RSF militia,” according to his statement.

On another note, residents of the East Nile area in Khartoum appealed to authorities to provide urgent food and medical aid to address the difficult humanitarian conditions.

The war and siege of the area for two years have led to the depletion of supplies, the cessation of charitable initiatives, and the spread of famine. The destruction has also affected health facilities, making access to treatment extremely difficult.

The Sudanese army and the RSF have been engaged in a war since April 2023 that has left more than 20,000 dead and about 15 million displaced and refugees, according to the United Nations and local authorities.

For weeks and at an accelerated pace, the areas under RSF control have been shrinking in favor of the army in the states of Khartoum, Gezira, White Nile, North Kordofan, Sennar, and Blue Nile.
