More than 100,000 Displaced People Have Returned to Sudan from Egypt

Published:

Sudanese authorities have confirmed that coordination is underway with embassies and the Refugee Commission to facilitate the entry of returnees to their homeland.

This was stated by Lieutenant General Yasser Mohamed Othman, Director of the General Administration of Crossings and Border Points between Sudan and Egypt, according to the “Al-Sudani” news website on Tuesday.

Othman said that 105,000 Sudanese citizens have returned from Egypt to Sudanese territory after the army managed to reclaim several states from the Rapid Support Forces.

The website noted that Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council member, Lieutenant General Ibrahim Jaber, chaired the first meeting on arrangements for returning displaced persons, attended by several ministers and security leaders.

For his part, Minister of Culture and government spokesperson Khalid Al-Aysir said the meeting discussed many issues related to the security screening of returning displaced persons, as well as the possibility of using river and air transport to facilitate their return.

Since April 15, 2023, Sudan has witnessed intense fighting between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, resulting in one of the worst humanitarian crises in the country’s history.

The current crisis is considered the largest displacement crisis in the world, with around 12 million people fleeing conflict zones and more than 4 million seeking refuge in neighboring countries to escape the war, according to humanitarian reports
