Sudan Calls on Security Council to Designate the Rapid Support Forces as a Terrorist Organization

Published:

Sudanese Finance Minister Jibril Ibrahim on Tuesday praised the United Nations Security Council’s condemnation of crimes committed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the city of El Fasher and the Zamzam and Abu Shouk camps.

Ibrahim described this condemnation as a step towards achieving justice for the victims, calling on the Council to designate the RSF as a terrorist organization and to impose sanctions on all its leaders.

Sudanese Attorney General Al-Fatih Tayfour confirmed on Monday that “16 defendants from the RSF leadership are being prosecuted in the case of the killing of the former governor of West Darfur,” emphasizing that this affirms the principle of no impunity.

In press statements, Tayfour said, “We have compelling evidence proving the involvement of RSF leaders in a number of crimes, including the killing of the former governor of West Darfur,” adding that he has requested Interpol to arrest suspects accused of committing several crimes during the war.

He noted that “the signatories of the Nairobi founding charter will be prosecuted in person or in absentia,” pointing out that “the leader of the National Umma Party, Fadlallah Burma Nasir, is among those who will be prosecuted in the coming weeks.”

The Sudanese Attorney General added that “dozens of army, police, and mobilized personnel have been prosecuted for committing individual crimes in the current war.”

Since April 15, 2023, intense and widespread clashes have continued between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces in various regions across Sudan, with both sides seeking control over key facilities.
