IGAD condemned on Thursday the attacks targeting civilian facilities and infrastructure in Port Sudan, stressing the importance of the city as a lifeline for millions of Sudanese.
This came as the Rapid Support Forces continued their drone attacks on Port Sudan, which serves as the temporary seat of government.
The attacks targeted civilian service facilities, including the international airport, leading to the suspension of flights.
IGAD Executive Secretary Workneh Gebeyehu stated that the organization strongly condemns the drone attacks on vital infrastructure and civilian areas in Port Sudan.
He added that these acts of violence pose a serious threat to civilian lives and risk worsening an already dire humanitarian and political situation.
The statement said: “These attacks on civilian infrastructure are unacceptable and must stop immediately.”
A Logistical Hub
He continued, “Port Sudan has always been a vital humanitarian and logistical lifeline for millions of Sudanese. Any attack on this critical center increases human suffering and hinders the delivery of urgent aid.”
The IGAD Executive Secretary affirmed the organization’s firm commitment to a peaceful resolution of the Sudanese crisis.
In the same context, China on Thursday called on its nationals to “leave Sudan immediately” after five days of drone strikes targeting Port Sudan.
The attacks also hit the main naval base near Port Sudan (in the east), as well as fuel depots in the city of Kosti (in the south), according to two army sources cited by AFP.
Referring to the Rapid Support Forces, a military source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, “The drones are again attacking the Flamingo naval base north of Port Sudan.”
Explosions were heard in the area following these strikes.
