The Atbara power substation for electricity production was hit by drone strikes, causing a blackout in northern Sudan.
The Sudan Electricity Company announced this in a statement on Friday, saying the station was targeted four times, which resulted in cutting off the electricity supply to the River Nile and Red Sea states. The company also noted that civil defense teams are working to extinguish the fire and assess the impact of the attack in order to implement the necessary repairs.
According to Sudanese prosecutors, the attack killed 10 people and injured about 20 others.
In recent weeks, there has been a repeated pattern of drone attacks on power stations in areas controlled by the Sudanese army, which blames the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) for these incidents. The RSF has increasingly used drones to target civilian infrastructure, including displacement camps and power facilities, especially in the River Nile state and northern regions.
The war in Sudan erupted on April 15, 2023, between the army led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the RSF led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti), with fighting concentrated mainly in the capital, Khartoum, and spreading to other parts of the country
Despite mediation efforts by Arab, African, and international parties to broker a ceasefire, these initiatives have so far failed to achieve a lasting halt to the fighting.
