Kamil Idris pledges to fully disclose his financial assets before taking the constitutional oath.

Sudan’s new Prime Minister, Kamil Idris, announced on Monday his intention to serve in his position without receiving any financial allowances or housing from the state. Idris also pledged to fully disclose his financial assets before taking the constitutional oath, emphasizing that this approach will apply to all members of his anticipated cabinet as well.

Earlier in the day, Sudan’s Sovereign Council Chairman, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, issued a constitutional decree appointing Kamil Tayeb Idris as Prime Minister. According to the Sudanese News Agency (SUNA), al-Burhan instructed the Cabinet and relevant state bodies to implement the decree. He also appointed Salma Abdel Jabbar al-Mubarak and Nawara Abu Mohammed Mohamed Tahir as members of the Sovereign Council.

Kamil Idris is a prominent Sudanese diplomat and politician who served as Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) from November 1997 to September 2008 and as Secretary-General of the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants. He ran as an independent candidate in Sudan’s 2010 presidential elections against former President Omar al-Bashir.

The war in Sudan broke out on April 15, 2023, between the army led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the Rapid Support Forces led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti), mainly in the capital Khartoum and other regions, resulting in hundreds of civilian casualties and injuries. Arab, African, and international mediators have attempted to broker a ceasefire, but so far, these efforts have not succeeded in achieving a lasting halt to the fighting
