Al-Obeid International Hospital (“Al-Dhaman”) was struck by a drone attack carried out by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), rendering it out of service.
The hospital administration announced this in a statement on its official Facebook page (Meta’s activities—which include the social networks Facebook and Instagram—are banned in Russia as extremist organizations) today, Friday.
The statement said: “The hospital is out of service indefinitely due to being targeted by the Rapid Support Forces with a drone this morning,” noting that staff have been granted a two-week leave because the hospital buildings sustained significant damage.
Sudanese media reported that the RSF shelled the hospital in addition to the Military Medical Corps Hospital and other residential neighborhoods in the city of Al-Obeid, North Kordofan State.
The Sudanese Doctors’ Network announced that the shelling of Al-Obeid Hospital resulted in the deaths of six people and the injury of 14 others, warning against the repeated targeting of hospitals, many of which have already gone out of service.
The war in Sudan erupted on April 15, 2023, between the army, led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the Rapid Support Forces, led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti), in various regions across Sudan. This conflict has severely affected healthcare services and the living conditions of Sudanese people, particularly exacerbating the crisis of internal and external displacement.
Arab, African, and international parties have mediated to broker a ceasefire, but these efforts have so far failed to achieve a permanent halt to the fighting.
