Justice Minister Calls for Termination of International Fact-Finding Mission in Sudan

Published:

KHARTOUM — Sudanese Justice Minister Abdullah Mohamed Diraf on Monday urged UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Sudan, Radhouane Nouicer, to obtain information from reliable sources and coordinate closely with the Sudanese government when reporting on the country.

Nouicer arrived in Sudan on Sunday and began a series of high-level meetings, including with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Following his meeting with Nouicer, Diraf reiterated the Sudanese government’s desire to see the conclusion of the ongoing international fact-finding mission in Sudan. He emphasized that local authorities possess multiple mechanisms to protect civilians and uphold human rights, a point he said was clarified during discussions with the UN official.

“We have asked the special rapporteur to rely on neutral and credible sources to ensure the accuracy of information and to strengthen cooperation between Sudan and international human rights bodies,” Diraf said.

He further stressed that any reports or statements about Sudan should be based on precise and detailed information, particularly regarding legal proceedings, and warned against making generalized claims without sufficient details.

Diraf expressed disappointment over what he described as limited UN support for rebuilding areas destroyed by “terrorist militias,” stating the UN has contributed only 16 percent of the needed funds, with the Sudanese government and people bearing the majority of the burden.

The minister also called on the United Nations to condemn countries that, he said, violate international conventions relating to Sudanese refugees, and called for greater protection for displaced Sudanese facing repeated attacks in host countries.
