Al-Burhan Renewed His Pledge to Defeat the Rapid Support Forces in Darfur

Al Jazeera – Sudan: The Chairman of the Transitional Sovereignty Council in Sudan, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, renewed on Tuesday his pledge to defeat the “Rapid Support Forces” (RSF) in the Darfur region in western Sudan.

This was stated during his visit to the village of Wad Al-Noora in Gezira state (central Sudan), which witnessed a massacre by the “Rapid Support Forces” in June 2024, according to the official Sudanese News Agency.

Al-Burhan, who is also the army commander, said: “My visit to the village comes in fulfillment of a previous promise I made to the wounded of the area, and as a rightful duty to offer condolences and sympathies to the families of the martyrs.”

He added: “We renew the covenant with the martyrs to proceed in defeating the rebellious militia (Rapid Support Forces) and mercenaries until the last inch of Darfur is purified.”

He continued: “We will not lay down arms except after eradicating this rebellion and this brutal aggression.”

On June 7, 2024, Sudan’s foreign ministry said that the Rapid Support Forces had committed a “massacre” in the village of Wad Al-Noora by killing 180 of its residents.

The Rapid Support Forces usually deny committing massacres against civilians.

In March of this year, the Sudanese army completed the full recapture of Gezira state after the RSF had taken control of it for about a year.

The army and the RSF have been fighting a bloody and destructive war since April 2023, which regional and international mediations have not yet been able to end.

The war has resulted in the deaths of more than 20,000 people and the displacement and refuge of about 15 million, according to the United Nations and local authorities, while a study prepared by American universities estimated the number of deaths to be about 130,000.

Recently, the areas controlled by the Rapid Support Forces across Sudan have started shrinking in favor of the army, which has regained control of Khartoum state and White Nile state.

In the other 16 states, the RSF only controls parts of North Kordofan and West Kordofan states, pockets in South Kordofan and Blue Nile states, along with four of the five states in the Darfur region.
