Published:

The Sudanese national team continued its impressive run in the eighth edition of the African Nations Championship (CHAN), after qualifying for the semi-finals by defeating Algeria 4-2 on penalties on Saturday evening, following a 1-1 draw after regular and extra time.

Sudan started the match with Mohamed Al-Bur Abuja in goal, while the defense line included Al-Tayeb Abdelrazek, Mazen Simbo, Yasser Jubak, and Ahmed Abdel Moneim. In midfield, Abderraouf Yaqoub, Salah Adel, Waliedin Khidr, and Mazen Fadl took part, with the coaching staff relying on Mohamed Assad and Moussa Kante in attack.

The match began with Algeria holding the upper hand, but Sudan quickly found its rhythm and took control of the game. Through long balls, the Sudanese side created dangerous chances that threatened the Algerian goalkeeper more than once. The first half ended goalless.

At the beginning of the second half, Sudan went ahead in the 48th minute through an own goal, before Ayoub Ghazala equalized for Algeria in the dying moments to force the game into extra time.

Algeria’s Soufiane Bayazid scored the equalizer in the 73rd minute, which sent the match into two additional periods of play.

The score remained unchanged through extra time, pushing the contest to a penalty shootout. There, Sudan prevailed 4-2, with Sudanese players successfully converting four spot-kicks compared to just two for Algeria, sealing their place in the semi-finals.

Sudan’s coach, Kwesi Appiah, expressed his delight with the victory, saying in a press statement:
“We had prepared for the penalty shootout scenario even before the match. I told the players we don’t want just an honorable performance, we want to win. We know that the Sudanese people are following and supporting us. I say it openly: this time, we aim to win the title.”
