Ottawa: Canada, Norway, and Australia Express Deep Concern Over Reports of Systematic Violence Against Civilians in Sudan
Canada, Norway, Australia, and several other nations expressed on Monday their grave concern over reports of systematic and ongoing acts of violence against civilians in Sudan, where the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) continue to battle the Sudanese army.
In a joint statement, the governments said: “We condemn in the strongest possible terms all atrocities and call for an immediate cessation of violence.” The statement underscored that the international community must not remain silent in the face of widespread and deliberate attacks on civilian populations, urging all parties to respect international humanitarian law and ensure the protection of innocent lives.
Witnesses told Reuters that civilians in the city of Al-Fashir, the capital of North Darfur, were subjected to gunfire in the streets, drone attacks, and incidents where individuals were run over by military trucks during the first days of the RSF’s capture of the city.
According to the reports, the situation in Al-Fashir has rapidly deteriorated since the RSF seized control, triggering mass displacement, chaos, and severe humanitarian distress. Local and international observers have warned that the fighting poses a serious threat to efforts aimed at achieving peace and stability in Sudan.
The joint statement reiterated the countries’ commitment to supporting diplomatic efforts to end the conflict, stressing the urgent need for humanitarian access to affected regions and for accountability regarding human rights violations.
