Published:

Sudanese Ministry of Finance announced on Monday the arrival of a high-level official mission from the World Bank to Sudan, marking the resumption of relations after a four-year hiatus caused by the military coup in October 2021.

During the meeting with the mission’s head, Mariam Salem, Regional Director of the World Bank for Sudan, Ethiopia, and Eritrea, Finance Minister Jibril Ibrahim affirmed the government’s current focus on rebuilding the war-damaged infrastructure and providing essential services in health, education, water, electricity, and renewable energy sectors.

The meeting emphasized the priority of the agricultural sector and the rehabilitation of infrastructure destroyed in Khartoum State to facilitate the return of displaced residents. Ibrahim praised the resumption of the Bank’s engagement with Sudan and assured continued funding for development projects.

Mariam Salem stated that the mission’s visit aims to evaluate ongoing projects in coordination with the Sudanese government, reviewing achieved goals and obstacles. She revealed that a World Bank meeting held in Washington last November reached consensus to extend support to Sudan through new projects focusing on food security and basic services.

According to the Ministry of Finance, the discussion included projects funded since 2024, which will continue over the coming years to strengthen community resilience, support primary education and emergency health responses, safety net programs, and enhance community resilience.

Furthermore, the World Bank approved financing for a new project concentrating on clean and digital energy, supporting Sudan’s move toward sustainable development.
