Sudanese Army Regains Control of Mabsut in South Kordofan After Clashes with SPLM-N Forces Allied to RSF

Published:

The Sudanese army regained control on Tuesday of the town of Mabsut in South Kordofan State following fierce battles with the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement–North (SPLM-N) faction led by Abdelaziz al-Hilu, which is allied with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

According to the Anadolu Agency, eyewitnesses reported that army units established full control over Mabsut, located west of the city of al-Abbasiya Tegali, after heavy fighting with SPLM-N forces. The witnesses added that with the capture of Mabsut, all areas west of al-Abbasiya Tegali are now under the army’s control.

Videos shared by Sudanese army personnel on social media platforms appeared to show soldiers announcing their takeover of the town.

Al-Abbasiya Tegali and its surrounding areas hold strategic importance as they form a vital link between North and South Kordofan and allow the army to control critical supply routes that influence both military movements and humanitarian conditions in nearby regions.

On Sunday, the army had already taken control of several areas west of al-Abbasiya Tegali after clashes with both RSF and SPLM-N forces. These included the areas of Tibsa, al-Damra, Qardoud Gama, and al-Mureib.

The three Kordofan states—North, West, and South—have witnessed weeks of intense fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, leading to the displacement of tens of thousands of civilians in recent weeks.

Out of Sudan’s 18 states, the RSF currently controls all five states of the Darfur region in the west, except for parts of northern North Darfur still held by the army. The military maintains control over most of the remaining 13 states, including the capital, Khartoum.

The humanitarian situation in Sudan continues to deteriorate as the conflict between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, which erupted in April 2023 over a dispute concerning the integration of the paramilitary RSF into the national army, has killed tens of thousands and displaced around 13 million people.
