The Sudanese army announces the capture of South Sudanese elements among the Rapid Support Forces

Published:

Military sources in the Sudanese army told Al Jazeera that the army seized elements from the Republic of South Sudan while they were participating in fighting alongside the Rapid Support Forces in the battles that broke out in North Kordofan province two days ago.

The sources explained that the army and its allied forces managed to capture more than 10 elements in the towns of Kazgil and Al-Riyash in North Kordofan, central Sudan, during their participation in the fighting.

The same sources revealed that Sudan intends to address the government of the Republic of South Sudan and present official evidence proving the participation of these elements in the ranks of the RSF.

Meanwhile, Al Jazeera sources reported the death of the field commander in the RSF, Hamid Ali Abu Bakr, in a drone attack on the city of Zalingei in central Darfur, western Sudan.

Basha Taqeeb, adviser to the commander of the RSF, mourned Abu Bakr—who leads “the Knight Move” operation—saying he was killed in an “assassination” he accused the Sudanese army of being responsible for.

Taqeeb vowed, in a Facebook statement yesterday, that the army would pay a heavy price in retribution for Abu Bakr’s death, adding that targeting the leaders will only strengthen their resolve to continue the broader liberation march, as he put it.

In related news, the Emergency Chambers Council of North Darfur warned of the worsening humanitarian catastrophe in the Ambo locality of North Darfur state.

The council said the Ambo region is living under tragic conditions that have led to the displacement of more than 6,500 families involuntarily.

Since April 2023, Sudan has been witnessing a war between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, which has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and the displacement of about 13 million people.
