Egypt Calls for Withdrawal of All Foreign Forces and Mercenaries from Libya Without Exception

Published:

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty has reiterated the urgent need for the withdrawal of all foreign forces, foreign fighters, and mercenaries from Libya without any exception or delay, in line with relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions, to restore Libya’s full sovereignty and preserve its security, stability, and territorial integrity.

The statement came during the minister’s participation on Monday in Tunis in a trilateral consultation session on the Libyan file, which also included Tunisia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad Mohamed Ali Nafti, Algeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad Ahmed Attaf, and the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy to Libya, Hana Tetteh.

According to a statement issued by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abdelatty reviewed Egypt’s consistent position on the Libyan crisis, underscoring the centrality of a Libyan‑owned and Libyan‑led political solution achieved through dialogue and consensus among Libyan parties as the only path to resolve the crisis and achieve peace and stability—free from foreign interference or external impositions.

He emphasized that Egypt would spare no effort in supporting its Libyan brothers, backing both UN and regional initiatives to unify Libya’s institutions and end the current political division.
Abdelatty noted that the ongoing division and the absence of a unified executive authority hinder the restoration of genuine stability, calling for intensified efforts to push Libyan parties toward implementing the UN road map, particularly by forming a new unified government and holding simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections as soon as possible.

The minister further stressed that Libya’s security is an integral part of Egyptian and Arab national security, urging a comprehensive approach to the crisis that addresses its political, economic, security, and social dimensions, tackles its root causes, and ensures sustainable stability in Libya and the wider region.

Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to continued coordination and close consultation with Tunisia, Algeria, and the UN envoy, in order to support the Libyan people’s aspirations for peace, development, and prosperity.

Libya continues to face a deep political impasse, with two rival governments vying for power — one based in the east, led by Osama Hamad and appointed by the House of Representatives, and another in the west, led by Abdulhamid Dbeibah, who insists he will only relinquish authority through elections.

A presidential election had been scheduled for December 24, 2021, but disputes over electoral laws and ongoing political rivalries prevented it from taking place.
