SOS from Darfur: Volunteers Warn of Severe Famine in Displacement Camps

Published:

Volunteers in Sudan’s western Darfur region have issued an urgent appeal to confront the “severe famine” gripping displacement camps across the region.

Field volunteers reported that the lack of funding and logistical challenges obstructing supply routes will soon lead to the closure of most charity-run kitchens in the camps due to the depletion of food supplies.

Yahya Abu Asal, Program and Projects Coordinator at the Ad-Daein Humanitarian Emergency Chamber, told Al Jazeera Mubasher that approximately 45,000 people are currently living in shelter centers and displacement camps in East Darfur, including the “Sabrin,” “Gharida,” “Manara,” and “Lagawa” camps.

He explained that these individuals are in urgent need of food, water, and basic provisions, as most charitable kitchens have stopped operating for an extended period due to critical funding shortages.

Abu Asal appealed to humanitarian organizations and charity groups to support shelter centers and displacement camps with food supplies and operational kitchens, and to assist emergency response rooms and local organizations by providing medical materials and shelter equipment.

Volunteer Aya Adam Juma told Al Jazeera Mubasher there is also an acute shortage of medicines and basic medical supplies, even the simplest and most essential items.

She explained that displaced families are struggling greatly to feed themselves and their children, relying almost entirely on volunteer organizations for medical care. She urged humanitarian and charitable groups to provide food and medical support urgently.

Meanwhile, volunteer Yasmin Abdel Hamid issued an urgent plea to civil society organizations and all concerned bodies to provide food, medical, and shelter assistance for displaced families — particularly the collective kitchens that have been out of service for a long time.
